Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist. The median nerve runs through your whole arm and passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist where it can be compressed. Carpal tunnel syndrome is most often associated with repetitive motions and positions of the wrist such as typing but can also be associated with injuries such as fractures, sprains or strains.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness in hand

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

PT can help by improving range of motion, muscle length, strength and mobility of nerves at the wrist to decrease pressure on the nerve. PTs also give advice on ergonomics and proper positioning to reduce the chance of injury.
