Can Physical Therapy Help Me? | Peak Therapy

According to the Oxford Dictionary, physical therapy is defined as “the treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery.” The American Physical Therapy Association explains, “PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.”

Can Physical Therapy Help Me?

Physical therapy can help a variety of people dealing with a range of medical conditions. Depending on your condition or injury, you may receive manual therapy, such as hands-on soft tissue and joint treatment. A few common applications may include sports injuries, balance and walking problems, and age-related issues. Your physical therapist will teach you how to manage and care for your symptoms with an individualized treatment plan. Physical therapy can help the entire body, improving functioning from head to toe.

What Happens During a Session?

During a standard physical therapy session, your first session will likely include a medical history review in which you discuss your medical history in detail with your physical therapist. Although they may already have the information on file, the therapist will want to ensure that they understand your conditions. A physical examination will be conducted to help your physical therapist understand your pain and/or limitations. They will look at your strength, flexibility, and balance. You may have to walk, run, exercise, or stretch in different ways depending on your condition. Your therapist will then develop an individualized treatment plan and you may be given some at-home exercises as well to continue your progress and to help prevent a re-occurrence.

Benefits of Physical Therapy

Depending on the reason for treatment, the benefits of physical therapy may include avoiding surgery or other procedures, pain management with reduced need for opioids, improved mobility and movement, improved balance, recovery from injury or trauma, recovery from stroke or paralysis, and management of age-related medical problems.
