Thoracic Pain

Thoracic pain or mid-back pain can be caused by many different things including spinal fractures (i.e. compression, osteoporotic, or traumatic fractures), joint inflammation, scoliosis, or postural abnormalities. There are more serious problems that can result in thoracic pain and require medical treatment, so it is important to consult your primary healthcare provider. If your PT suspects one of these such conditions, he/she will refer you to your physician.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Upper to mid back pain especially when sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Radiating pain to or from ribs or where the ribs attach to your spine; may cause pain with deep breathing, coughing, sneezing, etc.

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

In your initial examination, your physical therapist will determine the cause of your symptoms and provide treatment to address any associated joint restrictions limiting range of motion, muscular strains, weakness, inflammation, and postural changes. Your PT will provide you with a home exercise program to ensure quickest rehabilitation possible.
