MCL/LCL Sprains and Tears

The Medial Cruciate Ligament and Lateral Cruciate Ligament are ligaments that help stabilize the inside and outside of your knee joint. They run from the femur (thigh bone) to the lower leg bones. A sprain is a mild tear of a ligament that can get worse without proper care or if the initial injury is more forceful.

These ligaments can be injured with side to side forces to the knee and often happen in sports during jumping, cutting, or contact.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Decreased strength
  • Difficulty with weight bearing
  • Altered walking

*If an injury is severe, surgery is often required*

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Whether you receive surgery or not, PT can help in initial phases by decreasing pain and swelling with manual therapy and modalities like ice. Progressing range of motion, stretching, and strengthening exercises are also imperative in assuring full return to activities. If you are an athlete, we work closely with surgeons, coaches, and athletes to help ensure a successful return to sport.
