Disc Herniations

Discs are structures between each spinal vertebra that cushion the spine. They are made up of a very tough outer layer, with a more gelatinous inner portion to increase shock absorption. When a disc herniates, the outer layer is damaged and the inner portion can protrude.

Disc herniations can be associated with repetitive spinal motions, injuries such as falls or degeneration as we age.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness due to pressure on nerves surrounding the spine

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Disc herniations have the ability to heal. In fact, there is some research that shows they are more likely to heal if they are more severe. PT helps by ensuring you have full spinal motion and strength of the surrounding musculature. Techniques such as manual therapy, stretching, and pain-relieving modalities can also be helpful.
