Spinal Discectomies

Spinal discectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the damaged part of a spinal disc. Such damaged tissue can result in compression and irritation of nerves causing pain down your arm if the involved disc is in your neck or down your leg due to a damaged low back disc.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Local low back pain, especially with bending
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Loss of flexibility
  • Tightness in neighboring joints

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Everyone heals differently, and your physical therapist will determine an appropriate plan of care that may include soft tissue mobilization, reducing swelling, improving joint mobility and mechanics, increasing flexibility, restoring normal range of motion, and increasing functional strength in order to help you return to your normal level of function. You may have a history of lost strength because of the nerve compression prior to surgery that will be addressed as well. Your PT will provide a home exercise program to ensure proper healing and recovery.
